DEBORAH UPDATES 2007

The Southampton Chapter of Deborah is one of over 150 community based Chapters scattered throughout New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Florida. These Chapters are dedicated to raising funds for the Deborah Hospital Foundation which, in turn, supports the operation of the Deborah Heart and Lung Center.

The Southampton Chapter of Deborah had its origins in the mid 1960's when a group of twenty women met in the Grange Hall in Vincentown to raise money for the Deborah Hospital. This fledgling group continued to grow and flourish. In June of 1978, the Deborah Hospital Foundation officially chartered the Southampton Chapter of Deborah.

In 1983, the meetings of the Southampton Chapter of Deborah were moved to Settlers Hall in LeisureTowne. Since then, the Chapter meetings have been held every third Thursday of the month in Settlers Hall excluding the summer months. Today, the Chapter numbers over 250 members.

THE DEBORAH HEART AND LUNG CENTER

From its humble beginnings in 1922 as a sanatorium for patients recovering from tuberculosis, the Deborah Heart and Lung Center has evolved into a hospital that is recognized world wide for the contributions it has made in the treatment and cure of various heart, lung, and vascular diseases. Since 1922, Deborah has continued to grow and expand until today, it is a 116 bed facility which includes a 13 bed Surgical Intensive Unit, a 24 bed Medical Intensive Care Unit, and an 8 bed Neonatal and Pediatric Critical and Postoperative Unit.

Last year, the Deborah Heart and Lung Center had over 5,000 admissions with an average stay of 6.4 days. These admissions involved various surgical procedures such as open and closed heart surgeries and various pulmonary and vascular procedures. In addition, over 36,000 out patients received some form of medical treatment and/or medical testing such as cardiac catherization, cardiac electro physiology, nuclear medicine, and respiratory care services.

The Deborah Heart and Lung Center has a staff of 65 specialists who practice in the Center on a full time basis. There are over 440 Registered Nurses (RNs) who provide high quality care for the patients at Deborah. The ratio of nurses to patients is one of the highest in the state. In the Medical Intensive Care Unit, the Surgical Post Procedure Unit, and the Neonatal and Pediatric Cardiac Surgical Unit, the ratio of nurses to patients is on a one to one basis.

The high quality care and services provided by the Deborah Heart and Lung  Center is well known by anyone who has been a patient at Deborah. It is interesting to note that all this excellent medical care and treatment is provided at no cost to the patient except for whatever his or her medical plan may provide. The Deborah Foundation exists solely on what they get from the individual patient's medical plans (including Medicare, HMO's, Blue Cross, etc.), and from donations received from various organizations and benefactors including the many Deborah Chapters scattered throughout the area.

For more details contact Dorothy Whittaker on 859-8187

OBTAINING REFERRALS FOR ADMITTANCE

Depending on the nature of your request, prospective patients will then be advised as to what type of additional medical and/or other information will have to be provided in order to obtain the services they are requesting.

DEBORAH HEART AND LUNG CENTER MISSION STATEMENT
